Its like a catch 22 thing though Cathy. The fact that it is so contraversial a subject is what fuels the shock jock mentallity. If a dork <---[shock jock] -knows that it eats down into the fabric of his listeners, then to make a monumental issue out of it, is like slapping a hornets nest to punish the one who stung you, the whole swarm comes to life. While its hard to avoid the wide spread repercussions of the damaging statements made within ear-shot of millions of people, to continue to push the issue to squeeze as much remorse out of the offender as possible in order to 'right a wrong' is nothing short of foolish. Look at it this way. If we call Imus and his statements evil, how would be the best way to deal with it. How about... resist not evil?
To resist evil would be to stand in its way and say, nope... I ain't gonna let this pass unpunnished. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. This has been much of the cause of racial division that starts with one mans twisted take on Black women being nappy headed ho's. Then the preasure from others who have been offended throws the wheel of justice in motion, pulling in support as it rolls through the very heart and soul of those it touches, like a call to arms. Soon, one mans mistake becomes the catylist that will continue with a domino-type effect that will only stand to re-enforce racial division as angry people on both sides of the issue spar for truth, justice...and the American way? Oh yeah, the American way... freedom of speach, the right to bare arms, life, liberty... and the pursuit of happiness which we pursue all the way to the battle ground, all the way to the grave.
We, as human beings... need to understand that hatred ends not with hatred. I wonder how many hurtful events will rise out of one mans words of disrespect. How many neighborhoods will suffer division, how many cities will go up in flames as the children of all races sit watching and learning what 'true justice' is as they are programed to continue the battle for it? The direction from the man Jesus may seem like a feable response to aggression, to resist not evil.. to turn the other cheek... to agree with your adversaries quickly while your in the way with them. But when rightly understood it takes more true strength to let the aggression fade into nothingness than it does to lift your feet and let the crowd carry you into it. The only real power this ugly human condition has over us is the power we feed into it. Even the most seemingly right organizations enforce the idea of racial division. The NAACP for example. It stands for; The National Association for the Advancment of Colored People... a noble cause to ballance the scales of justice. But where is the NAAWP? Oh, nothing noble there. That would be a group of white supreamists... a bunch of skin headed nazis.
I stayed out of this post in an attempt to let this thing fade into nothingness by not feeding into it. Then I was going to just read it out of curiosity to see how others are taking it. Then of course the the topic itself was as a wheel of justice that pulled me in to help make it right, and finnished with a statement that could pit whites against blacks regaurding the NAACP vs NAAWP. Now in all honesty, that is a concept that has been right at home in my soul, and is exactly the problem, I have failed at 'resisting not evil'. And for this, I am truely sorry. But don't ask me to say sorry again. My mother, a passive racsist who although she was offended by words like nigger, delighted in steriotypical views of them dancing for whitey's entertainment for a slice of watermellon, always told me; If you have to say sorry more than once, it shows you didn't mean it when you said it the first time.
I feel it would have been better to fire him, period. He surely must be aware that his statements would raise the hell they did when whispered into the ear of millions. Thats plain irresponsiblity, or blatent ignorance, either way its unkind. Too late now though, its in the hands of the media and that puts it in the hands of the world.
